Raw Cat Food - Why It's the Best Diet For Your Cat, and What Are the Trade-offs For You?

One of the biggest myths about cat ownership is that cats can be carefree, independent and provide little to no maintenance. People believe cats are independent and self-reliant, but they do not require the same level of care as dogs. Cats require the same level of attention as dogs, sometimes even more. This is particularly true when you are trying to determine whether raw cat food is better than canned cat food, or kibbles for your feline friend.

It is sad to see the number of people in our country who have become obese and have to deal with the ill-health and suffering that comes with it. Diabetes, shortness-of-breath, exhaustion, and low self-esteem are all consequences of carrying around extra weight. The garment industry sings happy songs with all the extra thread they need to make. Although there are many reasons for this, I believe that we should only be able to blame ourselves for allowing it to happen. How many extra pounds does it take to realize something is wrong and become a problem? 10, 20, 50, or more? And how long does it take to realize that the magic pills, diets, elixirs and effortless, lose-weight-with-no-work-out machines are products being marketed to your ego, to separate you from your bank account, and not to solve your problem? The only way to achieve a normal life is through hard work, research and discovery. Let's not get into the human condition. This article is about cats and their eating habits.

This discussion must be accompanied by another. People rely on others for guidance in matters of animal nutrition because they aren't experts. Radio, newspapers, television, and the internet are the main sources of information for the majority of 'experts' that a person can use for daily decision-making and selection of options. There are two types of media. There are two types of media: first, investigative reporting that is shown in newscasts and opinion pieces. Second, marketing hype that funds commercial broadcasting. You can trust the former and may need to do more research if you are interested. The latter wants you to spend money with them. It's not always a bad thing. However, it ultimately puts people to work and provides many an adequate and comfortable life. The bottom line is that corporations have only one goal in life. This is to support their bottom lines. Recent events have prompted many to question the morality of corporate goals. However, so long as the market structure remains the dominant paradigm of our economy, big business will continue to seek out ways to maximize profit and profit.

What does all this have to do about cats? And should you feed them raw cat food? People rely too much on marketing hype when deciding what food to feed their pets. This is the wrong place to base such an important decision. Let's take the cat as an example. The cat is an obligate carnivore. This is not a scientific fact but also a cultural fact. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they eat most of the nutrients in their food from animals that they hunt or consume (raw cat food). A cat will eat all of its prey. This includes the muscle meat, brain meat, and stomach contents, which could include grasses or grains. She won't cook or bake her meal on the stove. It is raw. This description is used by cultural purists to argue that your cat should not be fed canned cat food or dried cat food. She would lose the natural nutrients she would get from wild cat food.

Pottenger's catsFrancis M. Pottenger Jr.Francis M. Pottenger Sr. was the father of the founders of the newspaper (1901-1967).Pottenger SanatoriumFor the treatment of tuberculosis, Monrovia, California. He conducted the Pottenger Cat Study, which was completed between 1932 and 1942. The study examined the effect of heat on the nutritional value of raw foods. This is how food reacts to heat when it's cooked.

Pottenger used donations of laboratory cats to evaluate the effectiveness of the adrenal extract hormones that he was creating. Pottenger observed that the adrenal glands were removed from the cats for his experiments. The diet consisted of cooked liver oil, raw milk, cod liver oils, and scraps of liver, sweetbread, liver, kidney, and muscle.

Pottenger started ordering raw meat scraps from local meat packing plants, which included organs and meat. He then fed another group of cats from the leftovers. This separate group was healthier than the cooked meat group within a few months. The kittens of this group were more active and had a lower post-operative death rate.

He decided to start a controlled scientific exploration at a certain point. Pottenger studied approximately 900 cats for ten years. Three generations of cats were included in the studies.

Study of meat:

One group of cats was given a diet consisting of:

  • Two-thirds of the raw meat, one third of the raw milk and half of the cod-liver oils are raw.
  • The second group received a diet consisting of two-thirds raw milk, one-third cooked meat and cod-liver oils.

Cats who ate all-raw food were healthier than cats that ate cooked meat.

  • The first generation of cats began to show signs and symptoms of degenerative diseases. They also became very lazy.
  • The second generation was over and the cats were suffering from degenerative diseases in their mid-life. They also lost their coordination.
  • The third generation of cats was already suffering from degenerative diseases. Some were born blind or weak, and many had shorter lives. Many third-generation cats were unable to produce offspring. The third generation of deficient cats had a higher incidence of skin diseases and allergies than normal cats. They also had a greater number of parasites. The third generation of kittens did not survive for six months. The cats developed soft, pliable bones and suffered personality changes. Females were more assertive and docile, while males became more docile.
  • The cat suffered from the majority of degenerative diseases that are common in medicine, and they died completely by the fourth generation.

The amino acid taurine was discovered at Pottenger's Study, but it had not been recognized as an essential amino for cats. Many cats today thrive on cooked meats that have had taurine added to them after cooking. Health effects were observed because the cats' diets did not contain enough taurine. Pottenger concluded that the cat's diet was deficient in taurine, a protein factor that is still unknown that could have been sensitive to heat.

Milk Study:

Another study, called the "Milk Study," involved cats being fed 1/3 milk and 1/3 meat. All cats were given raw meat. Different groups received pasteurized, evaporated sweetened condensed, or raw metabolized vitamin A milk. Raw milk was the best for cats, while other groups had similar health issues to those who were fed cooked meat.

Advocates of raw milk cite this Pottenger cat study as proof that it is more healthy than pasteurized milk. +

Although Pottenger's experiments didn't prove that raw cat food is better for supporting the physiological needs of cats than canned (or dry kibbles), certain conclusions can still be drawn.

  • Certain nutrients in meat, such as amino acids (proteins), can be destroyed by cooking.
  • Cats are more likely to thrive on raw meat than cooked meat that has less degenerative effects.
  • Cooking meat for cats requires that you replace the essential amino acid taurine and other nutrients lost during cooking.

Pet food marketing claims that "XYZ” cat food products are healthier for your pet. This is because they add "ABC" nutrients and vitamins to the product, which will protect your cat's health. Marketing laws require that all ingredients of any product must be clearly labeled on cat food packaging. It is up to you to decide which cat food is best for your cat.

Many are unsure whether corporations that provide the majority of our daily needs can be trusted in today's market. Social morality has always been at odds with arrogance and greed. Often, the end user ends up suffering unnecessary suffering. Pet owners are now taking matters into their own hands, and providing raw ingredients meals for their pets. This is a good step, but it requires that you change your lifestyle to prepare your pet's meals.

Here is an example of how to make raw cat food from scratch.

  • 2 kg [4.4 pounds]Raw muscle meat with bonesChicken necks are mostly cartilage and are easy for cats to eat. You can use thighs, drumsticks, or a whole chicken carcass. If you don't have a whole chicken carcass, dark meats like thighs or drumsticks made from turkey or chicken will work.
  • 400 grams [14 oz]raw heartIf possible, use the same animal as before (if you don't have a heart, try substituting with 4000 mg Taurine).
  • 200 grams [7 oz]raw liverYou should use the same animal, and preferably, 40,000 IU Vitamin A and 1600 UIU Vitamin D. However, it is best to substitute real liver for substitutes.
    • NOTE: If the liver or heart cannot be found, you can substitute the Taurine/Vitamin A/D with the equivalent amount muscle meat. You can also add 400 grams more meat/bones to the recipe if you don't find the heart. You can add 200 grams more meat/bones if you cannot find the liver.

  • 16 oz [2 cups]Water
  • 4 rawegg yolksIf possible, use eggs from antibiotic-free, free-range chickens
  • 4 capsulesraw glandular supplement(such as Premier Labs' "Raw Multiple Glandular")
  • 4000 mgSalmon oil
  • 200 mgVitamin B complex
  • 800 IUVitamin E"Dry E" is a good choice. Buy Vitamin E powder. It is much more straightforward than the little oil-filled capsules.
  • OPTIONAL: 1/4 teaspoonKelp14 teaspoondulse(1/4 teaspoon) It takes a lot of time to take apart capsules. If you are unable to find kelp in capsule form, you will need to crush the capslets using a mortar and pestle.
  • OPTIONAL: 4 teaspoonsPowdered psyllium Husk(8 teaspoons if you use whole psyllium shellsWhat is the best way to get started?

This recipe yields about 5-6 lbs of raw cat food that would feed one cat for several weeks. It would need to be stored in airtight containers, then thawed when needed.

Cats have a digestive system that can handle many things that human systems cannot. Cats' stomachs are acidic, making them resistant to bacteria like salmonella and e coli. Wild cats can eat a variety of foods, some with very few side effects. Wild cats are more likely to die from infections from injuries than food poisoning. There are steps you can take to reduce your concerns about raw cat food bourn bacteria.

  • Instead, avoid packaged supermarket ground beef that is made from whole pieces of meat.
  • As fresh as possible, buy "free-range" meats and poultry
  • To your raw food preparation, add priobiotics (which aid in maintaining intestinal health).
  • Raw cat food can contain bacteria that could be harmful to your health and cause illness. Keep raw cat food meat and poultry separated from other foods. Hand washing is recommended before and after handling raw catfood. Use hot soapy water to clean all surfaces and bowls that have come into contact with raw meat. After cleaning out your cat's litter box, wash your hands.
  • Within 30 minutes of giving your cat cat raw cat food, pick up and dispose of it.

Purists love to make homemade raw cat food. Many people lack the time or the talent to do this task. You can rest assured if you are among the latter. There are many ready-made products on the market. You can buy complete raw cat food that is frozen or mix it yourself. If you decide to go with the mix, make sure that all essential amino acids like taurine are present. To ensure your cat doesn't become deficient in these essential ingredients, add the heart (a source of taurine) to the raw cat food.

What are the trade-offs, you might ask?

One thing is for sure, you'll have to give up the convenience of shopping in one place at the pet food aisles. You will need to use credit or debit cards when ordering raw cat food mixes or meals online. To ensure that you have enough raw cat food for the next shipment, pre-planning must be a regular habit. You will need to return any shipment that has thawed because it could cause bacterial infection. Many companies will accept returns for thawing. If you make raw cat food from scratch, expect to spend several hours in the kitchen.

You will have to make a trade-off in the quality of the cat food you provide. You will no longer be able to buy store-bought'meal-based' cereal foods. Cats will now have the best food available. Some cats might be reluctant to make the switch because they were not exposed to raw cat food as kittens. You will be amazed at the improvements in their health. They will behave better than they did before receiving a high-quality raw cat food diet. Their immune system will also be stronger, giving them a better chance of living a longer and healthier life.

Ask any monk, or the next-door neighbor contemplative type, to tell you that life can be difficult. They will also tell you that suffering is the character that defines much of this universe, and that you are subject to more suffering if this is ignored. Even a small amount of knowledge and understanding about how things work can help ease the suffering. You must be willing to accept and change your life-style to make it better. Knowledge and understanding are not something you can just pick up by chance. To grasp even a fraction of what holds our lives together, it takes effort. Emotional epiphanies are not enough. Instant knowledge is rare, just like magic and miracles. And you don't want to wait for it. While your cat longs for raw cat food, you can also get no such thing. It would be like wondering why you carry all this extra baggage.
